Many people have asked for a simple, concise, non-profanity laden video that summarizes the issue that is shareable to politicians and family members. Here you go. No profanity, no technobabble, just a basic explanation. Go forth and share. Thank you!
"Intellectual Property" is the real enemy here. We live in a world where the freedom to build a device in a certain way is monopolized by a single entity, and they pay the State to economically annihilate anyone who dares to take such a design, improve upon it, build it, and sell it himself. Thus hindering competition from growing, forcing startups to jump through hoops and red tape to develop and sell their own products, thereby creating false scarcity and driving up the cost of repair thereof.
It's absolutely shameful that the public in a "public hearing" need to sacrifice the time from their work to voice their opinions, but yet lobbyists are allowed to be there and they're PAID to be there. Even more so, they get to have additional access to the decision makers outside the hearing.
As recently as the 90's a $50,000 piece of test equipment would have a published repair manual you could buy to repair that equipment yourself. Also, back in the 70's and 80's there were books published to repair tv's, car radios and CB radios. It's a darn shame we can't do this nowadays. I choose to repair my own electronics - when I can - because one, its cheaper and two, its very satisfying to me to press the power switch and see that broken "thing" return to life.
Something else to watch out for is UL. In the fire alarm industry we are not allowed to replace a simple fuse because that would void UL. Why? Because even though I am factory trained to program and repair that system, I'm not a certified rework technician. It's all about greed...
I cant believe how scummy corporations are. The ability to repair things is an amazing thing for a young person to have.
The problem is planned obsolescence. Appliances and other goods have been breaking down by design for a long time now. That’s the real enemy.
